Born nearly two decades apart, one on a small farm in Ireland and the other in uptown New Orleans. Their paths would cross in the most unlikely of circumstances.
Opposition was strongest from both their families with the one living father threatening to never again write to his son if he went ahead with his marriage plans.
Even the hierarchy of the Catholic Church weighed in with their assumed predictions that "the marriage would not last six months."
"Us Agin' the World Triumph of Love over Church and Family" is a story of courage and love that not only survived six months but is stronger than ever... some forty-three years later.

Us Agin' the World Triumph of Love Over Church and Family edition by Eugene Clarke Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
As I read of Gene and Sis' journey, I kept thinking of the scripture, "For I know the plans I have for you,". God's hand at work in their marriage and in their careers (healthcare and motherhood) is so very evident! This morning when I opened the first page, I intended to devote a relaxing hour to reading -- but couldn't leave their story. Now, hours later, I feel I have grown in understanding of the sacrifices necessary for a strong marriage, as well as an insight into workings of the Catholic Church. And I absolutely enjoyed learning about Ireland.. A must read!!!!
"Us Agin' the World" is the story of a 24 year-old Roman Catholic priest, newly ordained, who has just arrived at his first parish assignment in Gulfport, Mississippi from his native Ireland in September, 1964, and very shortly meets one of his parishioners, a widow with six children who is 19 years older than he. In less than five years, Father Clarke has left the priesthood and married "the love of [his] life" in an Episcopal Church. Eugene Clarke is now 71 and his wife, Sis, is 90, and this book tells the story of their extraordinary life together, as well has the story of Mr. Clarke's childhood and seminary training in Ireland. What is especially engaging about this highly readable "page-turner" is that the story occurs in the context of the role of the Catholic Church in Ireland and in the deep South of the United States shortly after the Second Vatican Council. Sis and Eugene Clarke's love for each other was thwarted from every direction, but they endured and prospered despite family and the Church. It is hard to imagine what it was like for that essentially very young guy and that much older woman struggling to make a life together in the late 1960s and 1970s, but Mr. Clarke's telling of the story is lucid, frank, honest, compelling and heartwarming. This is a wonderful book for all!
An amazing love story. The author is a natural story teller and I didn't want to put the book down. Beautifully written and so inspiring. Highly recommend this book, Mariellen Harland
Loved his detailed description of growing up in Ireland. I've not been there, but he described it well enough that I know what it looks like. Glad he & Sis found each other, they loved each other so much. Certainly not lust, but love. Did not care for the career ups & downs, very boring. A good look into the church and a good love story.
Working with Eugene Clarke at Beverly Enterprises, I had the utmost respect for him both personally and professionally. And even though I worked with him for about ten years, I certainly did not know "the rest of the story". It is knowing now what I do about both him and Sis that my opinion of the Clarkes is further elevated.
Overcoming so many obstacles and prejudices make their life story truly unique and fulfilling. Being about the same age as the Clarkes, I know of three men whom I think would make wonderful priests but who have married and can no longer serve in that capacity. The Catholic church would be blessed to have these men as priests.
How wonderful this world would be if all husbands and wives worked to make their marriage something special as the Clarkes did. Read this to know how special love can be.
